Jean-Yves Aubone
I was born into tennis. Both my parents and several other family members played professional tennis. I had a racket in my hand by the time I was 2 years old. It was the only sport I competed in official competitions with. The summer before high school started, I decided to give myself the best chance to play professional tennis. I decided to start home schooling so I could spend as much time playing tennis as possible.
During my junior career, I represented the United States in Junior Davis Cup. I competed in the junior US Open and was top 10 in the nation in every junior age group. However, I wasn’t quite good enough yet to go pro so I decided to play collegiate tennis.
I played 4 years at Florida State University from 2006-2010. There I was the only 2-time All-American in program history, ACC Scholar Athlete of the Year and ACC Player of the Year. I played number 1 singles my last three years and won two professional events before graduating.
After graduating I decided to take a break from tennis. I worked in finance for two years, including 14 months in the Morgan Stanley Private Wealth Management Division in Miami, FL.
From there I decided to give professional tennis a full time chance for the first time in my life. I played for 3.5 years, winning 17 professional titles (3 singles and 14 doubles) and represented the United States in the Pan-American Games.
When I retired I decided to give back to tennis by becoming a coach. I worked for 1.5 years at Cherokee Town & Country Club in Atlanta, GA as the Head of Junior Tennis. I oversaw a program with over 150 kids. I then spent the next four years as an independent contractor for the USTA Player Development program. My primary role was to be Reilly Opelka’s traveling coach.
At the beginning of our journey together in 2018, Reilly was 229 in the world. He reached a career high 19 in the world in the summer of 2021. That’s where I took a break from traveling to spend time with my family, and focused on helping players maximize their potential through my online coaching program, as well as specialized training blocks.
As of July of 2024, Reilly and I are back traveling together on the ATP Tour, though my online coaching program remains, and my dedication to helping junior players and parents is as strong as ever!
